You’ve likely heard of gum disease, an infection that attacks the gums and bone that surround and support your teeth. Did you know that some people are more at risk for gum disease than others? Our team is happy to share the risk factors with you.
Risks for Gum Disease
Bacteria and plaque are the foremost causes of gum disease, but other factors, including the ones below, can increase your risk for gum disease or make gum disease worse.
-Genes – Some people have a family history of gum disease, so their genes make them more at risk. However, even people whose genes put them at risk can prevent or control gum disease with good dental hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.
-Crooked or crowded teeth – Having crooked or crowded teeth makes it difficult to properly brush and floss. Because of this, plaque can be missed in the mouth, so gum disease is more likely. Having orthodontic treatment to straighten your teeth can give you a better chance of preventing gum disease.
-Smoking or chewing tobacco use – Using tobacco products raises the risk of gum disease and makes gum disease more severe. The choice to stop smoking is your own.
