Gingivitis: The Beginning of Gum Disease

Posted .

Are your gums pink and firm? That’s good! If they are puffy, deep red and regularly bleed when brushing, you might have Gingivitis. Gingivitis is a form of gum disease that commonly causes redness, inflammation, irritation, and bleeding of the gums. The problem is sometimes overlooked because the condition can be so mild.

While reversible, it’s vital that you take gingivitis very seriously because it can easily develop into full-blown periodontitis, a more damaging kind of gum disease that can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Poor oral hygiene is the reason that people get gingivitis. Neglecting to brush daily, not flossing, and forgetting to go to the dentist for dental cleanings is a bad idea.

Because pain rarely accompanies gingivitis, it is important that you recognize the symptoms and signs, which are; swollen, inflamed gums that are tender; gums that are more red than pink; bad breath; and gums that bleed easily.

What can you do about it, you ask? The best step you can take is to visit your dentist for a check-up on a regular basis–usually every 6 months. Your dentist will help you combat gingivitis through consistent, professional cleanings. Following this up with good oral care at home is usually all that is needed to reverse gingivitis.

For proactive dental care at home it is recommended that you brush at least 2 times per day with an antimicrobial toothpaste, and floss once per day. Bacteria grows unhindered in your mouth when you sleep, so you should make your mouth the cleanest prior to going to bed.
