Using Scaling and Root Planing to Treat Gum Disease

Posted .

Have you been diagnosed with gum disease or periodontal disease? If so, you are not alone. A 2012 CDC study affirmed that chronic periodontitis afflicted 47.2% of adults who were over 30 years old in the U.S. This oral condition, which is a result of the harmful effects of plaque, a sticky bacterial film that is always growing on our teeth. If the plaque is not controlled with good home care including brushing and flossing, the plaque can harden on the tooth and root structure. This hardened deposit, called calculus, requires profession intervention for removal.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a non surgical deep cleaning, which addresses and treats the bacteria and their toxic by-products attached to the root surfaces. This procedure specifically focuses on cleaning the area under the gum line and along the root. The bacteria and calculus is removed off of the root surfaces by planing. The cementum and surface dentin that is laden with microorganisms, toxins and calculus are carefully smoothed out. Scaling and root planing is relatively painless since we use a local anesthetic to minimize any potential discomfort.

Preventing Future and Further Treatment

The deep cleaning of a scaling and root planing treatment may eliminate the need for more costly dental treatment down the road. It can aid in the prevention of the advancement of gum disease and in many cases, restore healthy gum conditions. Good home care, including brushing and flossing, is paramount to maintaining good gum health.
